Other Voices is a film programme curated by Claire Craig as part of this years The Event, a contemporary arts festival in Eastside, Birmingham. The programme presents a combination of films from four artists who directly explore and reference an important and personal artistic influence. In doing so Other Voices communicates the themes and understandings of influence. Although the influences draw upon a variety of themes and areas of interest, from artists to architects, they are all tied together through using the process of homage to explore their individual influences.
Admiration, inspiration and conceptual influences from another artist’s work is an integral part of an artist’s practice. Each of the exhibiting artists embrace and accept the creative voices that inspire them. This approach challenges their existing art practice but also produces dialogues through acknowledging the influence of another artists’ voice, which would otherwise remain in the past.
Claire Craig, born 1985, Glasgow. Claire currently works as an independent curator based in London. Past projects include VOL.1 film programme, including work by Duncan Campbell and Anna Lucas, Sounds From the Next Room, an exhibition investigating the artistic collaboration between Catherine Street and Kate Temple, and a public art commission at The Big Tent festival 2010 with emerging artist Euan Taylor. Current research interests include artistic collaborations and creative misreading in the context of artistic influences.
